Advice on peas please
« on: September 20, 2010, 18:19 »
Hi all, I am all for making the most of my small plot so would like to know which pea variety you all recommend, which will crop earliest if sown in early winter, hopefully in the gap between my runner bean sticks, before the runners start shooting up? All advice appreciated.

Ta, Totty

I should think one of the early varieties will be your best bet.  Not sure about the specific variety, hopefully someone else will be able to suggest some.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

You'll need a round pea, they are the hardiest, such as Feltham First.

Need to be sown between mid-October and Mid-Movember, or between mid-Feb and Mid-March.

It will be best to give them a bit of protection, such as cloches.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Feltham First was one i had considered, are there many more as early as them? Should they be fine with some polythene sheeting wrapped arond the outside of the rows?

That would be better then nothing!

To be honest, I don't bother with over-wintering peas, I don't think it worth the hassle just to gain a couple of weeks, but I can see why you wish to try it.

I sow my early peas in mid march under some fleece till they are up and growing then leave them to it.
They usually crop during the first half of June, before the runners are growing strongly.
I sowed Early Onward last year :)

Sorry to but in on this thread
I left some peas on the plants to save seed for next year. The site has been cleared now and i have the seed saved but i have little pea plants coming up all over the ground.  Will these do anything or should i just dig then in.

They certainly don't have time to do anything before winter, to get anything, you'll have to nurse them through it.

Thanks DD :)

Can I replant them into a tidy row?
How much protection would they need, and is it worth it

Thanks

Thanks dannie,

Had a look at DT Browns and all looks and sounds spot on, hopefully all will go well and they will be ready before the runners deprive them of all sunlight! Cheers guys!

I suppose you would get away with moving them whilst young. You'd may need to cloche them during the very cold weather.

As I said earlier, I never bother with them.

"Meteor" worked well for me last year. Overwintered without cloches and a lower growing variety so I just used a wall of green netting and sticks for support.
Peas were sweet and early (sowed in bed end of Oct. harvested from end of May) but I didn't grow enough!!!
