raspberry canes
« on: September 20, 2010, 12:52 »
I want to get rid of most of my raspberry canes which are taking over the bottom of my plot. Is there an easy way to get them out or is it another one of those long digging jobs. I've also got asparagus crowns to come out so i suppose that will be the same. Ho Hum :( >:(
Hurray finally retired
two plots now 31A and 35A

Raspberries; good news is that they are shallow-rooted and have no tap-root.  :)

Bad news is that the roots are quite wiry and extensive; probably best to first slice down with a sharp spade to try and sever any connecting roots between the ones you are keeping and the ones you are getting rid of (some will be suckered from the parent.)

Asparagus is a completely different story if it is well-established (good idea to practise saying "G'day cobber" before you start digging!)  :nowink:
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

Some of mine have come up in the grass paths between my raised veg beds. I just yank them out Good idea to cut off any runners outside of the bed by tracing them back to the bed itself.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

shame to waste them - is there a swop shop on your plot? We can leave unwanted plants in an area by the clubhouse with a 'free to good home' sign over them. They always get taken  :)
There's more comfrey here than you can shake a stick at!

I've asked around and found a good home for most of the asparagus if i can get it out, and one bloke is taking some of the raspberrys. ::)

Quite right too.  Asparagus is the devil's food as far as I'm concerned. *shudders*

There seem to be some peculiar folk in Swindon! (Well, who in their right mind would drink their dishwater to see if it tasted like asparagus?!)  ::)

Each to his/her own of course but I've never rated asparagus. Likewise artichoke.
