Watery Tomatoes
« on: September 20, 2010, 09:10 »
I grew a wide range of tomatoes this year, from small cherry right up to big beefstake. Half were grown in the greenhouse and half outdoors. I had a good crop from all the plants but the tomatoes were very  watery with very little solid flesh. A fellow allotmenteer said it was too much watering. I watered the greenhouse plants every other day   and the outside plants when they looked like they needed it. I also fed the plants twice a week with Tomatorite. Any ideas as to why I ended up with balls of water?
There is no better show of antisipation than a man sowing seeds in a field.

I think your friend is correct, i only needed to water my greenhouse toms once a week and they were in 10ltr pots. Also your feeding schedule is in my opinion too heavy. I feed once a week with a half strength solution. I grew Shirley, San Marzano 2 and Costoluto. All 3 were very firm and tasty.

I don't think that the feeding schedule is too heavy at all, especially for the indoor plants in restrictive pots. Mine were fed once a week with full strength solution after the first truss had set and twice a week after the second had set. I've had the best crop of indoor ones for years.

However, the outdoor ones were not fed or watered at all and they've also done well. I tend to think that over-watering, rather than over-feeding is the issue.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Read my post again.

I agreed that over-watering was the problem but didn't think the feeding schedule was too heavy

Thanks for the replies folks! I will cut back on the watering next season, I do prefer to eat my tomatoes rather than drink them!
