Will the carrots keep growing?
« on: September 17, 2010, 15:01 »
I have a few carrots that are still very, very small. Will they keep growing if I leave them in the soil, or is it getting too cold for them? If they're not going to grow much more, I might as well pull them out...

If the foliage is still strong and green then they should grow a bit more, depending on the weather in the next few weeks.

If the foliage is starting to yellow and die back then you might as well enjoy your baby carrots!  ;)
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

I thought I'd get bigger ones!!
I planted Autumn King in June and they're still teeny tiny. Will they really not grow any more?

I plant my autumn carrots in big plastic containers - the carrots are well on there way  but will now move them into the vacant greenhouse as the toms come out!

I'm with cooperman. I grow lots in flower buckets and move them into the greenhouse when the toms and cukes have gone. To be honest I get far better results that way than growing them in the ground. We had some for tea tonight. Almost an inch across at the shoulders and good length and these were from an early June sowing.

do they have to go into a greenhouse.  I have some in a bucket for Christmas and was hoping to put them into the shed to keep them out of the frost. Will that do or do they need some heat?

That is a brilliant idea, to late for this year, but next year will be following in your footsteps

Thanks

I do this with calabrese and this year potatoes as well ;)

It's a bit awkward though cos it is getting cold early and the tomatoes are still fruiting, so I'm going to be cramped for space

Is the shed light as well, is another question.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

for shed read daughters wooden house that has 4 windows and in which she is unlikely to play in whilst its cold.  I take it that the bucket should be placed in the window to maximise light to the tender plants?

If you want any plant to grow, it must have light!
