What we feared is true - snails home!
« on: September 16, 2010, 17:04 »
Just been listening to the radio and discovered some lady just won a prize for research showing that snails have a homing instinct.  Some even managed to find their way back from 100m away so throwing them over the wall does not work. We all knew it!

Check out http://www.bbc.co.uk/pressoffice/pressreleases/stories/2010/09_september/15/brooks.shtml
for more detail.

My boot was working none stop last season but since the hard winter there have hardly been any snails in the garden. Same with the big slugs but I notice they are just starting to make a comeback but its too late for them to do too much damage this year.

Anyone found the same or is it just me?

Does anyone have the book "50 ways to kill a slug" - can't say I've tried all of them, but I've enjoyed giggling at the creativity!

Pop them into an old plastic bag and drop the bag (open of course) into a dog poo bin or rubbish bin. They will appreciate their new home on the local tip and do a great service breaking down all our organic rubbish.

My local bin is more than 100 metres away from the allotment.

<snip>but since the hard winter there have hardly been any snails in the garden. <snip>

It did the world of good for the slug population but the snails have been bigger, better and as prolific as ever. Thing 50p piece slugs at the smallest.

Mine rarely come back from the road outside the allotment as the traffic seems to have a detrimental effect.

You could always invite the local French population to feast on them.
If I can grow things in Shetland, then you can certainly grow things where you are!

Usually our area is covered with so many snails and slugs it's impossible not to stand on them but this year there's hardly any.
