Asparagus
« on: July 14, 2007, 21:54 »
Sorry, today was the first time for literally weeks that I've been able to have a good play on my lottie so it's questions galore!

The plot has 1 Asparagus plant in the ground that I got 4 nice spears from. The previous owners also left 6 pots with very small weedy plants in. I chopped the spindly spears off the potted ones and then I read somewhere to let them flower?
So, all the plants have flowered (the flower on the one in the ground is MASSIVE).
What do I do now? Should I plant the 6 potted ones? Should I cut the flower stems from all of them? I really don't know what to do and I know I'm very lucky to have been left these so don't want to blow it!

All suggestions appreciated.

Plant them out, but don't take off any off the foliage. The foliage helpsto build up the crowns for subsequent years. Similarly I wouldn't take any more spears from the established crown Again let the new foliage build up the crown for next year
Ah well ! There is always next year !

Thanks for that, I was going to chop them all off thinking it would save the plant energy!
As soon as it stops raining (!) I'll get them in the ground.

Use plenty of muck when planting because these plants are going to produce a crop for about 20 years!

Yes. I'd be surprised if you can manage it without damage to the roots. However, its the way asparagus is propagated so look after the ferns just now and move it in the late Autumn when the foliage has died down. Treat as new crowns i.e plant in a properly prepared weed free site where it can thrive for a number of years and don't harvest anything from it next year to help the crowns settle for subsequent years.
