Snowball caulis
« on: September 15, 2010, 12:30 »
Is it worth sowing snowball caulis now (they could overwinter in modules in the unheated greenhouse), or would I be better waiting until Jan/Feb?

Surely someone must know. It's not like cauliflower is a really unusual, exotic crop, is it?

If it helps, I'll be sowing mine in January, but not Snowball - Nautilus, which is an early cauliflower.

It comes back to the old question. "What does it say on the packet?"
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Well from another page on this site:

http://www.allotment-garden.org/greenhouse/seeds/cauliflower.php

Cauliflower Snowball seeds
Compact and very early with solid pure white heads of superb quality. Can be sown as early as January and also during autumn. Recommended for deep freezing.

so it sounds like you can.

i planted some seedlings in greenhouse border today.
Was about to throw them on compost heap when a very experienced grower said to try them.
He's done it before and said he harvested well in time to get tom's etc in.
Got to be worth a try

That's the thing - the packet says you can sow in Jan/Feb or Sep/Oct (http://www.suttons.co.uk/Shop/Vegetable+Seeds/Cauliflower+Snowball+A+Seeds+158365.htm?sku=158365), but doesn't really go into much detail.

Seeing is there are 200 seed in a packet, why not try both. It won't break the bank!
