Moving the coop
« on: September 12, 2010, 08:27 »
I'd like some advice on our cleaning routine.

Currently I'm cleaning out the run completely once a week using poultry shield, and then dusting while it's damp with diatom, especially under perch ends and in crevices and corners.

I poo pick every morning.

The run is grass, but it gets discusting, and they end up with poopy feet.  Last week half way through the week, when I put them to bed, I got my hubby to help me pull the run away and I brushed the grass down with a stiff brush, removing most of poo, and then hosed it down before putting run back for next day.

I thought if we moved the house along every four days, after I could just hose it off. My hubby says they are chickens and should be expected to have poopy feet! Am I being OTT?

I used to do the same thing with mine not the diatom I use jeyes once a month. I used a garden rake on the mud/pooh. I then put the poo on my compost heap. They do get poo feet whether they are in a run or not.

I let mine free range about a month ago they still have pooh feet. Infact so does everyone who goes anywhere near the garden.I am now looking to buy those disposable plastic feet gloces they use in hospitals

Sorry, I meant can I put the chicken house and run on bare beg bed in the winter? Or will they get too wet and muddy?

I was thinking I could just turn it over for them each week.

I wouldn't put them on there if it was wet.

I poo pick my lawn daily but I do only have two chicks now. In the dry weather the sun makes the job easier  :D  I would move the coop to fresh grass when you can and leave that patch to recover once you've cleaned all the muck off it. I like to pick up the muck and compost it rather than spraying it away. I then mow it and it greens up beautifully  :D  Having an Eglu makes moving house so much easier.

I use Hemcore or Aubiose in the run and in the nesting box which helps keep things clean. I hate to see muck on their feet too. In wet weather the stuff is a boon as they wipe their feet before they go indoors  :)

Yes, I must admit, I am thrilled with our hen house and think we made thr right decxision going for a solid timber wooden one, but I wish I could move it on my own.

I HATE having to ask my hubby to help me, as if it were up to me I'd just shunt it along every couple of days.  Instead I have to go through the whole rigmarole of my husband saying it is excessive and that we only need do it once a week.

Might get me some coop wheels!!!!
