I have to admit that I don't know, but a lady I met in Wilkinsons told me the same thing a couple of days ago.  :o

Yep, they won't nor will snails I put copper wire round the legs of  a table outside that I have my plants on, not a nibble.   :D

i should talk to john realy and see if i could get a add on here in the shop section? and work out a discount system for forum users

The copper thing doesn't work with my slugs. I have some planters made out of an old water cylinder and they get full of slugs, and I bought some copper rings too and they don't work

In my job I have lots of short lengths of copper cable left over. I made up some rings of different thicknesses. I tested them out and the blighters just went right over the top of them while I was watching.

I think the idea is that the electrolytic action between the copper and the ground forms the equivilant of a battery, just like when a tooth filling touches a piece of silver paper and gives them an electric shock.

Could be we have tough slugs in the North or I suppose they could be wearing mini wellies.

Slugs are wet, and copper is galvanic with other metallic elements in the environment with moisture about. Think about crunching aluminium foil on a filling in your mouth. I think that's what it is, or the principle anyway.
