good bait to test if run is fox-proof
« on: September 10, 2010, 19:42 »
Hi folks,

Can anyone recommend bait I could use so that I can test whether my run is now fox proof?  The foxes come through the allotment and I want a good test of the new construction before I get any more girls.

Cheers

Tom

If you can't find anything like that foxes will go for peanuts believe it or not.  So too will badgers so a double test.  Sprinkle several handfulls in the run.
11 bantams (and counting!) 2 dogs 1 cat

This is going to sound really silly, but I take it non-salted ones?

no such thing as a silly question  :)  You are absolutely right - unsalted.  I was watching my garden (pre chicken-keeping days) and regularly put peanuts out.  One evening I had eight badgers and two foxes there.  Badgers were definitely top of the pecking order and the foxes waited until they had finished.
I have since moved and would not encourage them near my chickens now.

How about getting a chicken outfit from a fancy dress shop, then if the fox did get you could turn the tables with the baseball bat which was hidden behind your back, be best to do it now though before it gets too cold.    :D

I've had some good suggestions although am going to test an open tin of cat food or two to test it. Fingers crossed it will be fox proof, or if not I'll get to find out before my chooks arrive!

Is it wise to tempt the fox??? it may try that little bit harder next time ve been looking at the skirt on the eglu and wondering what if the fox starts digging 100 mm further back my logic would be to remove the temptation putting car food in there is asking for trouble in my opinion I most like am wrong  :tongue2:
