I make pickled chillies every year and my recipe is 7 to 8oz sugar to 1 pint white malt vinegar.  The small bottles are 560 ish millilitres or basically a pint. I heat them together gently until the sugar melts then boil for a couple of mins to make a syrup and then let it cool.

It's best to halve the chillies at least so the pickle can get inside, but whether you leave it at that, slice or whatever is your choice.  Pack into a clean jar and pour over the pickle.  It's as easy as that and this pickle liquid is also good for shallots or garlic, so easy to use up  :D
