« on: September 09, 2010, 16:02 »
Hi all,
Our 4 yr old ex-batt Daisy has a mishappen beak can anyone tell me if we can help her or is it a job for a vet?  If we can do it can anyone suggest how and with what, my husband feels able to do it but I just want to check on here.
Thanks
Kathie

Hi Kathie, in what way is it misshapen?
Staffies are softer than you think.

most batt' hens have their top beak clipped to stop them pecking each other whilst in their cramped conditions.
Is she able to eat and drink ok?

She is drinking fine and appears to be feeding, whether she is just pecking and missing we can't be sure.  We have been hand feeding her her treats each evening for the past few days. She seems fine in herself but has lost all her tail feathers. Hubby thinks her beak should be clipped again for her own sake but I'm not too sure.

In which case this may help:-

http://www.ehow.com/how_4513302_trim-chickens-beak.html

I have never clipped a beak (never had the need) but I know Grannie Annie has to do her turkeys as they can be really vicious to each other - perhaps you could contact her  :)

A lot of chickens are starting their moult just now so it sounds like she is  :)

Joyful,

I have read the page you sent me and after careful consideration we have decided not to put our little lady through it as we are sure it could be the end of her.

She loves sitting on the step with us and does eat out of our hands but she hates being picked up for her checks.  We have decided to keep a close eye on her and hand feed her treats daily as we would never forgive ourselves for causing her distress or worse.

Thanks again
