moving broody & eggs?
« on: September 07, 2010, 12:39 »
my broody is sitting on her eggs in a small coop & run in the garden.  As the weather has turned I want to move her (in coop) into a shed.  My worry is that as the eggs are due to hatch any day is it best to move her now or risk the weather and leave her til after hatching (if any, fingers crossed)?

Personally I would leave her be..... it would be gutting to disturb her and find she abandons them....

She is more than well enough equiped to keep them warm and cosy :)

better to put a cover over the coop or something :)
I love Pekins, Polands and Seramas :) and eggs!!!

I agree with chookiechook, leave them be, if you are really worried do you have a gazebo or similar (frame tent perhaps) that you could erect to help keep the weather off them?
Staffies are softer than you think.

she is in a converted rabbit hutch inside a run and covered by a tarp. I have a shed ready - so will not disturb her pre 'hoped-for-hatch' but will carry her in when any newbies are with us?   I have half of the shed sectioned off ready .... so tense! I had thought to cover the coop/hutch with a blanket and carry her in situ on eggs carefully in the dark but if you say not then fingers crossed - the forecast is better for tomorrow so she will surely be ok! Is it ok to move her with any chicks - she won't abandon them if we move her in the hutch *carefully* will she? The move would be the whole kit & caboodle, no direct contact with her or chicks.

When they have hatched perhaps you could move her one night when they are sleepy  :)
