thinning parsnips
« on: September 02, 2010, 09:35 »
I have 2 rows of parsnips - one of tender & true, the other is student. Had a look yesterday and some are pretty close together. Tried to pull one but it snapped off - so how am I going to thin them, or shall I just let them fight it out - not planning to eat them yet anyway. My soil is pretty heavy.

Assuming they have been growing since the spring their roots could reach a couple of feet down by now so there's no way you'll be able to just pull them out, especially from clay soil!

Best leave them; they can stand some overcrowding although it will affect the ultimate size they grow to.

Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

One of the best things about being an orang-utan is the fact that you don't lose your good looks as you get older

Thanks, think I'll adopt the lazy approach and ignore them until November
They were so 'ickle I didn't have the heart to pull them earlier - s'pose i should have tackled them in June - they were planted in April.

Lucky you, mostly germination is so hit and miss there isn't any need to thin out

I always leave them without thinning them although I try to sow them thinly and have always had good results. You will probably get parsnips of various sizes though, but from my point of view that,s good news. Mind you I haven't lifted any of mine yet this year, hope my words of wisdom don't backfire on me.

This is going to degenerate with comments like, "finger carrots", "potatoes".....
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?
