How much wheat?
« on: August 30, 2010, 11:51 »
Hi
I was just wondering how much wheat I should be giving my girls a couple of hours before bedtime?
I scatter it over the ground and they devour it, I'm not sure how long it should take them to eat this and I usually end up putting more down. I was thinking as long as it was all eaten I was probably feeding them enough, But last night I noticed my leghorn's (who is the greediest) crop was really full, is this Ok, can I overfeed them? Any guidance much appreciated.
Thanks

Hens will nearly always eat any wheat you put down - it is like candy after eating salad all day ;)

About a tablespoon per hen is about right (you can pick up a dry cat food measure at a pet shop, then measure the correct amount of wheat for your flock, then use this every day - it makes life a little easier)

I read (somewhere) that 20g per bird is about right, just find a tin, or plastic cup that holds the exact amount you need for your flock. This container then becomes a chook magnet they will follow it anywhere. :)

WHOOPS!!!!
I think I have been giving them far too much!
I will weight out the correct amount tonight so I can gauge from now on.
The only problem will be the more timid ones might not get very much.  :(

I just chuck a handful for each bird all over the run, takes them ages to find it all and being everywhere, even the timid ones get a bit!
