Runner beans have quite a few black marks - disease?
« on: August 29, 2010, 10:35 »
Following the few days of rain I popped back to the allotment to find that quite a few of my runner beans have black marks on them. Some of just a few black bits along the edges, some have little patches (See attached picture).

Some of the leaves were also looking a bit pathetic, but overall the plant looked ok. Is this a disease? Or some side effect of the heavy rain we've had?

I was going to use the latest carrier bag of beans, but I was going to chop off any black bits. I just hope that when I go back to the plot today that the remaining beans won't all be black! Still plenty more beans to come!  :(

It could be a disease called Anthracnose.  It is a fungal carried by the seed so don't save seed for next year from these plants.

The pods will be fine to eat if you cut out the black bits.

A week ago we had high winds. I think it is just bruising. Mine are the same.

Ok well that's good news :)

It has been very windy here, so bruising could be a real possibility.
