Fruit Trees..
« on: August 27, 2010, 13:16 »
They guy in the plot next door to me is lucky to have an abundance of fruit trees, apples, pears, plums and cherries... unfortunately for him, all the fruit is dropping like flies.
He got his plot last year and the trees have been allowed to grow with no pruning for lord knows how many years... I would say the apple, pear and plum trees are 15'-20'+ high.
Can anyone please advise the best way to tackle these so he gets the best results for next year or the year after come to that...  :)

The best thing for some detail I can suggest is to google this on the RHS site, they have good pruning guides.

Apple is when the tree is dormant.  I suspect pear is the same.

Plums and cherries are to be done in summer (June - July), I think it's probably getting a little late now.

Cut out any dead, diseased, damaged and crossing branches.  Aim to get a goblet shape with good air circulation.

The detail of how to prune - e.g. apples are down to spurs, etc - as I say look at a book as there are differences and I don't have that experience to advise.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

The very heavy rain has brought a lot of the fruit down round here.
People were out picking the fallen fruit today, to use as best they can.

Sad when the weather spoils the harvest like that :(
