I'm new to the Web site, and need some advice about an article I've read in 'Henry's Garden Hints & Tips 1' about sowing Turnip Seed to curtail the growth of 'Couch Grass. Could someone please let me know if I just broadcast the seed across the affected area, and after germination dig it back into the soil, or do I need to grow the Turnip as a full crop?

re the turnip seed question.

You need to have enough bare soil to sow the seed onto/into or it won't germinate and release the chemical that couch hates and stops it growing. You don't need to grow actual turnips as a crop.

I tried this some years ago (first plot ever) as an old guy said it would work.I'd forgotten all about it unitl I read your post.  Only partially successful I'm afraid and digging it out was much more effective.. although hard work

Most effective ways of dealing with couch grass is a spray or three of glycosulphate or lots of exercise with a spade.

Oh and don't put it on the compost heap. Bag it up and throw away or dry it out and burn it.
