Apricots

Hello,
  Have just joined this site. Wonder if anyone has experience of growing apricots? Quite fancy growing a free-standing tree on our allotment, have been reading that they are much more hardy these days. What sort of yield do they have? Might chicken out and get a plum tree instead. Would love to hear any advice, thanks.
