Propagation
« on: August 20, 2010, 10:30 »
I have an abundance of flowers both in beds and baskets.  Are there any that I can propagate or overwinter, saving me money next year.  I now have a greenhouse, and am hoping to put it to use throughout the cold weather.  Basically what I'm wanting to know is what can I grow to keep me busy during the cold dark days.  Can't you tell I'm not looking forward to winter.  :(

Hi Joyce,

Can you tell us what sort of flowers you have growing in abundance? Then people can advise whether you can, with the best way, or can't propagate for next year.

fuscias are always good for propogating from cuttings, especially the trailing or climbing varieties
There's more comfrey here than you can shake a stick at!

Among many, I have trailing fuchsia, large type begonia, antirrhinum, surfinia, trailing and upright geranium, trailing and upright sweet peas, dahlia, sinetti, dianthus, pansy, african marigold (which incidentally are about 40" tall   :) ),  and many varieties of trailing basket plants, as well as many more in the beds, too many to mention.  Basically what I'm after is something to keep me occupied during the winter, and also to save money next year.  Ta.

Dahlias :
Cut the plants down to the ground once first frost kills them
Lift the tubers and store upside down in a frost free place
Wait until it gets a smidge warmer next year
Slap the tubers in a tray
Roughly cover with compost
Water
Take loads of cuttings
