Please help me decide
« on: August 18, 2010, 19:19 »
Following on from my question about your favourite apple variety, I quite like the look of these 2. But I'm Queen Indecisive, so please help me choose  ::)!

This one...

Or this one...

My 3 year old likes the look of the red one, but you really can't beat a crisp autumn russet - mmm. Oh decisions, decisions   .
My music teacher was right. If you have to make a mistake, make it good and big and loud; with a bit of luck people will think that it was always meant to be like that.

I enjoy a nice tasty Russet and they do store quite well so it gets my vote. :)

I would go for the Russet - love their nutty flavour.  :)

OK, coin says 'Scrumptious'.

Hubby says 'that's the one I preferred' and my 3 year old son is delighted that he's 'won'  ::).

So, 'scrumptious' it is, hope that they live up to their name !

I like the red one too, in fact I'm looking for another apple to put in and Scrumptious fits the bill. Good choice coin  :D

Why such a limited choice? The best eating apple for sweetness combined with crispness is the Royal Gala in my opinion. I think that grows OK in UK but not sure about the keeping qualities.  Try as many different ones as you can before you choose.

I think October is the month for apple festivals, if you can hang on till then and do a search for any apple days in your region, you'll get a really good idea of what grows well locally and what might be problematic - either from a cultivation or pollination point of view.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

I know through talking to the gardener at ther local stately home (don't you know  :tongue2:) that Cox-types don't grow well here, it's just too cold and wet most of the time and you'll only get a good crop one year in five.

The limited choice is because I probably need a self-fertile variety and, if I rule of Cox varieties, there's not much left that I can find.

I missed the question about ones favourite apple so can i throw a spanner in the works and suggest Discovery. They are early to ripen sweet juicy and bright red I have one on my plot and I have to beat my fellow allotmenteers off with a stick when there ripe, which should be quite soon. Mind you they dont keep more than a couple of weeks so i guess i should share :(
