Peach growing on plum tree!!!
« on: August 17, 2010, 20:13 »
In a garden I work in they have three 8 year old peach trees close to each other.  Also a plum tree very close. The peaches have produced about 25 fruits.  The plum tree which in the last few years has had a good crop, has had no fruit this year.... except a small peach, almost smooth like a nectarine (the ones on the peach trees are very fluffy).  Is this heard of? Or is this some kind of new freak hybrid? If anyone has any ideas, please let me know.

I wonder if someone grafted a peach branch onto that tree as an experiment.

Pardon my stupidity.  Can the plum and peach cross pollinate, and if so is this a new fruit?

The type of pollen shouldn't make an enormous difference to the fruit, just what the fruit grows into. While a peach graft is possible, is the branch a low one? In which case, could it be the damson rootstock fruiting? I've come across 2 examples of thes so far this year...

I couldnt get a photo, sorry.
Yes it was a low branch, the fruit was attached on a short stalk directly to the 3 inch diameter branch.
The people who own the trees and planted them would certainly have not grafted them, so if this is the case then it would have be done at the nursery.
I have eaten the fruit and it had a texture of plum flesh with a slight apricot taste as opposed to peach/nectarine.
I have retained the stone, which looks like a small peach stone. Would this grow fruit true to the original if grown?

I think this is a damson or bullace... I think it should come more or less true from seed.

How big was it? Could it be a greengage rather than a plum? Despite the name, my greengages are yellow, smooth and taste how you describe. They are rounder and slightly smaller than plums.

It was the size of a medium peach/nectarine, so  a bit bigger than your average plum.

Also, the plums on this tree are generally smaller and purple (plum) in colour, not peach yellow/orange.
