Onions looking a bit dodgy - is this ok?
« on: August 17, 2010, 19:44 »
Checked the onions the other day and noticed that a lot of the tops are starting to fall over. All good I thought, then upon closer inspection I noticed that some of the green shoots had white spots on them, and some of the onions have a little bit of white on them too. Some look like the attached photo.

Is this bad news? Or just natural because of the recent torrent of rain that we've had? Hopefully a little sun will help??

And just when I thought the onions would make up for the death of my pumpkin plant  :(

Looks like downy mildew just put the fork under the onions and lift them, they will dry and keep with no problems, on our site we have a problem getting onions to survive past the begining of June.

Can I dry them at home to be safe? Or is it best to lift them all now and leave them on the plot?

You can dry them whereever you like, try to ensure air circulating all around them so perhaps on some wire netting (or cake cooling trays).  The sun helps this process but if it's going to rain that will be counterproductive  :D
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...
