Can you name this plum
« on: August 16, 2010, 16:00 »
At the weekend i took my grandaughters blackberry picking. On the roadside I came across a tree which was heavily laden with fruit. At first i thought they were black cherries as thats exactly what they looked like, but they turned out to be the most delicious small plums!!
We picked a bagful and my husband made a lovely plum upside down cake.
I love them that much i want to have my own tree, but dont know the name of this variety.
The leaves of the tree are deep reddish black the same as the plums it bares, which make it quite difficult to spot the fruit from a distance.

Anyone know what it is called?
Love me, love my veggies

I picked some Damsons yesterday and made a blackberrie/apple and Damson crumble and it was absolutely delicious.
I am definitely going to pick some more.

Thanks for that Doubles. I am not sure it was that one though. I dont recall any thorns on the tree branches and the fruit was very round just like large black cherries rather than oblong shaped.

If it is "wild" then it will/could have come from a plum stone, this will probably have been cross pollinated so what you could have is a new variety.

If that is the case then the best you could do is to determine what possibly have been the dominent parent. Probably just guess work.

Is there anywhere near you that would graft a piece on to a rootstock?

Years ago you could register a new variety but these days I suspect that several dozen or hundred tests have to be performed. The Dotty Plum :D  :D

Have seen what I think are called Mirabelle plums that are small, sort of large cherry size so that is another option. However if wild it may well simply be a discarded stone that has done what it was intended to do, germinate, and the parentage has turned out attractive.

Could it be a Cherry plum?  I think a lot of them grow 'wild'.

Now there i was getting all excited thinking i had "discovered" the Dotty plum and along comes Cobnut and dashes my dreams!! LOL

I forgot to add earlier that there was also a bush with the yellow ones on but i thought they were a different thing altogether as they tasted much blander than the gorgeous red ones

Thank you one and all for your help  :D
