Aviary
« on: August 16, 2010, 08:41 »
Thinking of having an WIR or aviary type house built and was wondering if I have one made 6 x 11 could I have 6 smallish (Polands) in it?  I know everyone says 1 square foot for each but can't seem to correlate that with how many with feeder etc.  Thanks for your help!

Edited to correct spelling of "aviary" for future search purposes

How much run space would be in this 6 x 11? You need 1 square metre minimum of run space per bird so for six birds you would need a run measuring at least 2mtr wide by 3mtr long but ideally more if they are in it full time such as 2 mtr wide by 6 mtrs long etc. These measurements do not include the housing which would have to be attached to one end. The 1 square foot measurement is for the perch space only.
Staffies are softer than you think.

Was thinking of making a table with a little ramp for them to go to the coop.  So they would still have the space under the table to scratch in  :D

I was toying with the same idea Jae Dawn - have a look at these guys:

http://www.aviaries4u.co.uk/chicken_runs.htm

I wanted a specific size and they are quite happy to make any size and shape you want (I really loved the hexagonal run they do but it would take up my whole garden!).  They have been extremely helpful and the runs look great, but I am sure someone more experienced on here will point out why they are not!  :tongue2:

The old fashioned way is still the best and kindest for any birds. A house in the middle with a 5-6ft high DIY chicken wire run around it as large as you can make it. Needs to be embedded or the chicken themselves will probably scratch a large enough hole to get out.

Mmmmm chicken wire may keep chickens IN, but it won't keep a fox OUT!  :)  We try to recommend weldmesh runs, but if you can't afford total weldmesh, at lest for the first 3ft height, then chicken wire and a mesh or wire top.

Try Hills of Devon - they offer it by the roll, next day delivery and great prices. Lots of us use them. Just buy small holed and around 14swg - the thicker the wire the better  :)
