glyphosate will do the job ,

usual dilution rates ,

let it die off and when the few shoots reapear hit them again , that should sort them out 

USE A SPRAYER , THE DROPLETS OF WATER HAVE TO STICK TO THE WEED LEAVES AND STEMS ,

a watering can means you are throwing money away

Most glyphosate based weed killers become inert on contact with the ground. So straight away BUT check the instructions as it normally tells you.

I agree, digging the roots out is the best way to kill them.
I have used and will use Glyphosate again but digging the beggars out is my best way.

If I were to take over a plot that was covered in weed and had not been cultivated for a while then without doubt I would get the glyphosate out but any returning weeds would feel the sharpness of my hoe.

A poster on here said a couple of years ago that every time they went down the plot they spent the first 15 and the last 15 minutes hoeing and their plot was nearly weed free. I did this and it does work providing of course the plot is already reasonably weed free.

The problem with using a sprayer to apply glyphosate is that the fine droplets easily drift on to neighbouring plants.

A dribble bar fitted on to a watering can instead of a rose is very controlable. You can buy them cheaply at garden centres.
