it would seem i have some ants on a section of my plot, only maybe 2sq foot, do i need to get rid of them or will they be ok to leave alone?

Well, that's the question isn't it? Are they likely to do any harm (apart from the aphid farming)?

If they are black ants then they should be ok - keep an eye on them to see if they get up to anything very unhelpful.

If they are red ants I'd do my best to persuade them to move. One bite from a red ant results in my skin developing severe itching and hard, hot swollen lumps. I hate the things and try to avoid them more than I would wasps or bees.  :blink:
