new coop initially for 2X warrens
« on: August 12, 2010, 19:44 »
hi all

here are the first images

The dimensions are as follows:

Living Area (can be added to if i find not big enough)

Length = 34"
Width = 26"
Height high = 40"
Height low = 32"

Nest Box

Width = 29"
Depth = 17"
Height high = 20"
Height Low = 15.5"

Under Coop which will be part of the run when complete

Height 30"

Height to point on roof = 74"

The run will be same height with a slope down and be at least double the length of the coop itself.

Do you think thats ok for eventually 4 hens? or will i need to build an extension? (east wing  ::))

on the slope to the back i am thinking of adding a "dormer" to gain some extra flapping room within the coop for the nights although they will be in the run most of the day.

added links as cant get the pics to show in post...

Now thats a work of art :D
From the pics it doesn't look big enough for four chickens.
Perhaps something on your pic to put in scale.
Good luck :wacko: :wacko:

I'm sorry, and I know the DEFRA minimum size for a coop is only 1sq ft per bird, but I wouldn't put 2 hens in there, let alone 4.  I'm afraid you can't trust the coop sizes on Ebay, those coops are always too small.

Can you make it bigger like you said?  and the run needs to be at least 1sq metre per bird, but we try to say to people at least double that if not more.  Chickens need room to run and fly around. It's what they have legs and wings for.

This is the house my Brian made for me for 4, but the ones that are in it now are bantams, and the 2nd one houses 5 at the moment!

Hi Annie,

thanks for the feedback.. yeah the run will be big anyway i'm looking @ 5 - 6' high with 7 long and the width of the coop itself.

its not a problem for me to make the coop bigger - as you can see its still in its early stages, i will just need to rethink on how i am going to do it... i may make it longer will have to have a look at space etc...

Hi Stu, pleased you are having a re-think on the coop size, any chance you can make the run bigger?  My rithmatic isn't good, but if that is 7ft x 29inches, doesn't that make it less than 2sq metres?  which isn't big enough.  For 4 chickens, it needs to be at LEAST 4sq metres, but preferably at least double that.

Squashed hens are not happy hens and can end up being rather pecked and poorly hens like this one who belongs to someone I know.
