Newbie looking at a coop/run....avoid ebay??
« on: August 10, 2010, 13:50 »
Having recently decided to keep chickens at homeI was looking at the many varied coops and runs.

Having read a fair few posts on this forum about the less than brilliant coops on eBay I was wondering whether anyone has something like this?

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=260636322835&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT

You can buy it on Amazon too, direct from Cocoon.
Are they a reputable make?  Some of the coops/runs look similar butaren't branded as Cocoon.

People keep saying to avoid the Chinese imports but it isn't clear whether this was manufactured in China and then sent over. I have asked the seller but only did so yesterday so have not had a response.

I was looking to keep 3 or 4 chickens and it seems about the smallest size coop and run for them.

Would appreciate any advice.

Thanks

Hi Jertzee

Funny enough, I have bought the exact one as a friend has hers in one and it is very good and her hens are very cosy and at home! My neighbour is a joiner and he complimented me on it (rare), as he said the make is pretty good.

It went together very easily and the quality of the build is good. The only thing I am having to do is build a larger run, which people on this forum have helped me with.

I hope that helps you in your decision making?

Alan

By the way: the one you selected is much dearer than others on ebay for exactly the same thing. I used an ebayer called susan7873 and so did my friend.
A link to one is: link

Hope that helps you to save a couple of quid.

Alancane - I looked at the feedback for susan7873 on eBay and they have had some terrible reviews - that is why I went for the other people. Judging by some comments I wondered whether they are the same ones.

Did you buy yours (for the friend) from susan7873?

Also noticed that with the P&P they all seem approx the same price - either way I appreciate your comments - anything to save a few quid!

Hi Jertzee,
Yes, both myself and my friend bought ours from that Susan, service was great and arrived quickly etc. Looking at her feedback - she has 1196 positive ratings in the last month and 10 negative - I guess that might speak for itself, but I can only talk about my own personal experience.

I am definately happy with mine.  :)

Did you treat the wood with any preservative when you got it?

No, it's already treated - the only thing I have done is add an extra varnish layer on the roof panels to make it even more waterproof. Any help?

This is not the best place to talk about e-bay feedback. We don't want the sellers suing us for any reason.

I must admit I would go for a plastic coop over wood any day. After having had chickens for a few years I started out with an import wooden coop which warped very quickly after just one wet winter. I have also had sheds and smaller coops but the best thing I did was to go plastic. No annual wood preserving to do, no expensive redmite lotions and potions to buy and use - I simple clean out and wash. You can still get redmites in plastic but they are so much easier to deal with - wither steam clean or jet wash out  :)
Staffies are softer than you think.

i think you need to go with what your budget will stretch to, if its a cheaper one be prepared to do some minor repairs down the line and i would treat it with a wood preservative on arrival and then each year.
I think the cheaper ones are a good buy if its going into an enclosed run and out of the elements.
Most of the business sellers on ebay, you can also deal with direct (but they tend to be cheaper on ebay)

we brought that coop but with the extra roosting area. It is a nice coop. I brought mine direct from the company as it was slightly cheaper as they hadnt had to factor in ebay and paypal fees.
