Brown crispy courgette leaves
« on: August 10, 2010, 09:50 »
I did a search but cant find this exact problem.  I have 5 courgette plants in a big raised bed, under a munty frame.  All were going great guns - big healthy plants, lots of green growth, and plenty of fruit forming fine.  Male flower heads were dropping off quite quickly but didnt seem to be causing any probs.

Was away for 2 days, came back and one plant looks really sick - almost all the leaves have gone very brown and crispy, and slightly curled edges.  Other plants look fine.

Bed was well manured beforehand.  It has been raining a lot but they have a good 1.5 feet of well draining soil before our hard clay.

I have noticed some black bugs on some of the stems and flowers.  Nothing obvious on the leaves.

Pics attached.

I can't help you with the reason for the brown crispy leaves -- someone else might have an answer.

BUT it is not caused by the bugs, which are just black fly and can easily be squashed (mind those prickly leaves) or washed off.

I would sugges you remove the leaves rigth from the base of the stalk and the plant has plenty of new ones growing which look fine. keep it weel watered, a little feed and hope all will be well.

Hope that helps a bit

Could be cucumber mosaic virus which can affect courgettes too if you are unlucky (it is often spread by aphids unfortunately!)

I had a virus infection on one courgette plant a few years ago; yellow streaks on the leaves and the plant was clearly sickly; didn't look quite like yours although I whipped it out pretty smartish!

A link here which does suggest that may be your problem

Could they just be suffering from lack of water?

Doesn't look like Mosaic Virus as far as I know.

Lotty holder since Aug 09... I've FINALLY finished clearing it! On with the p.lanting  ....

I had that on mine as well as on the squashes plus powdery mildew.

I snipped off all infected leaves and new leaf growth formed. Still going well.

Thanks folks. I cut the affected leaves off last night, not many left! Other plants look totally fine. Gave it a good feed and fingers x it doesn't spread. I've had v bad powdery mildew so maybe just a symptom of that.

I agree with JayG here, looks like my pumpkin plant last year.  :( Leaves rapidly died off, fortunatley pumpkins were almost ripe and so survived

Hmm, just checked that link and looks identical. Tonight even the new leaves are going curly brown and crispy. Reluctant to lift it as still producing and none of the others have symptoms, but maybe will just rip it out to be safe.

Thx again

I have had a similar problem - my initial thoughts were that is was some sort of mildew. Than I noticed that the worst affected courgette plant was growing by a pot of mint. The mint was seriously affected by what I think is rust. The rust seems to be causing the courgette to have brown leaves. I have removed the brown leaves and moved the mint. Not sure this is the cause - but it might help?

Interesting - they are in a bed next to where I just lifted my garlic, which had bad rust (still great bulbs though  8) ).  I've taken the leaves off, but not many left!  And even the new small ones are showing signs.  Think I might just lift it...

It aint fair - everyone moans about how many courgettes they have - I love them and grew extra this year and still not really enough  ::)

I can see the apparent causative link, however rust is usually host-specific so shouldn't transfer between varieties.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...
