Club Root
« on: August 07, 2010, 20:24 »
I'm gutted ,just discovered Club Root on my second plot No 20. Is it just the roots I burn or the whole plant? The Cauliflower curds look OK are they safe to eat?

Bad luck  :(

The tops will be fine to eat or compost.  Just bin or burn the roots.

I have a clubroot problem too.

See this link: here

I was particularly interested in the bit about surfactants.

I have not yet seen any clubroot on my plot so far this year, but I have only dug up 3 caulis so far...my sprouts look much stronger this year than they have ever before..normally they look weak due to clubroot and some even die.

Last yr about half all my Brassicas where affected with clubroot.

This year i used lime when i was preparing my brassica area. I grew the seedlings in pots well, and before i put them in i dug a hole and lined it with lime.

Ive had no clubroot this yr and all my brassicas have been better than ever  :D.

Lime defo works.
I'm very important. I have many leather-bound books and my apartment smells of rich mahogany.

That's the way I do it also.

A precise handful in each hole!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

There are cloob root resistant varieties of Brassicas that have been introduced in the last 5 years or so which have given good results. I have not personally tried them but it might be worth giving them a go. Perhaps plant them in clean compost and with additional lime as suggested.

Search the site as I think there is reference to resistant varieties somewhere.

Just looked - it's referenced in the diary section under pests and diseases.

Thanks all for your replies. I think I'll go down the Liming route and use a dedicated set of tools for this plot so hopefully I will not spread the Club Root to my other plot. I just hope I have not already done so. I will also sow resistant types from now on.

Don't forget to clean the boots as well as the tools, plot6b  :(
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Thanks for that Yorkie. Sorry to drag an old thread up but someone has told me to treat the affected areas with Jeyes Fluid as this kills Club Root. Is this true? Also what implications are there to the soil purity as I think this treatment would do more harm than good!

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO !

Ahem,  that's a no.  ::) :D

The use of Jeyes Fluid as a soil sterilant was banned several years ago.  Please don't.  It may have been practised in the past but not now.  And I don't know whether it ever did the trick anyway.

We have an old boy on our site that sprays his onions with that mix often , personally i think spraying it direct onto your growing onions is a bad bad idea.

Your answers have got me wondering. Why is it acceptable to use it in a Greenhouse to steralise and clean but not outside? just a thought!!!

Because added to the soil - it will kill all the living things that you are seeking to encourage when you add manure and compost.

It doesn't just pick the badies to destroy you know
