Coarse Cooking Salt
« on: August 05, 2010, 22:29 »
What's the difference between Coarse Cooking Salt and Coarse Sea Salt?

There is a recipe that requires coarse cooking salt and I cannot get it in any supermarkets!!

Cheers

Paul

I always think that cooking salt is a lot saltier than sea salt

But the recipe is asking for coarse Salt not your bog standard salt...

Then I would use course sea salt, I was just saying that I think cooking salt tastes saltier, so if the salt is for taste then you may need more sea salt for the same flavour.

If you are using it for salt crust ? I wouldn't think it would make any difference.

Agree with mumofstig.  It's the same as comparing bog standard saxa table salt with fine sea salt.  Same product, different flavour, the latter being much superior.
Cheese makes everything better.

Who'd think there was so much to know about salt?

Maybe cooking salt is rock salt rather than sea salt?

I use Maldon sea salt. What are you using it for?

Spiced pickle onions.

The recipe I have uses the salt as follows.

Placed unpeeled onions and salt in a large bowl add enough water to just float the onions.  Cover, stand for 2 days, stirring occasionally.

The recipe then goes on...

Cooking salt/sea salt is unadulterated, table salt has something added to stop it from getting damp and ending up in a lump.  I agree that cooking salt seems saltier than sea salt.

seeing as the salt is dissolved in water, IMO it wouldn't really make any difference what salt you used ::)
I'd use ordinary cooking salt as it is cheaper........the salt is only to remove some of the 'water' from inside the onions, so that the vinegar can sink in :)

Basically, cooking salt is a coarser salt with all the minerals left in and no iodine is added as you get in table salt. Cooking salt, due to less processing, is also cheaper and saltier, and with no added iodine, preferable for cooking or pickling. It also comes under the names of kosher salt and pickling salt.
