silver moon onions
« on: August 02, 2010, 19:47 »
Does anyone know why some of my silver moon onions, well just the big ones, have split  :(  and sent up another shoot? Have they been in the ground too long, they were planted 29th Sept. I dug them all up today and puts them to dry in the greenhouse. CC

This is called set division,  the cause of the splitting is usually planting at the wrong time or growing in poor soils, prolonged dry weather can also induce set division. The sets can throw twin bulbs and if any of the conditions above occur you end up with the split and new shoot growth.
