acorn squash (downs and ups)
« on: August 01, 2010, 13:13 »
i planted out my acorn squash in may, when it was freezing. it took ages before it started putting on new growth, and it took even longer to produce any fruit. it made lots of flowers, but nothing else. when it finally make some squash it just rotted and fell off  :( but now after three hard months i have a fruit the size of a tennis ball  :D its my most prize vegetable on my allotment  :)
thanks for reading

Way to go! Congratulations.

I keep looking at my squash and wondering what is going to happen. I did exactly the opposite to you: I planted them out late as the weather wasn't too good here either. Now I have loads of male flowers and the odd burgeoning little squash, but I'm not convinced they've been properly pollinated due to the lack of bees. Any that do grow will be lovingly cherished and eaten with respect!

I have got the hang of eating with respect now.  Nobody was allowed to touch my little gems to start with because I was just too proud of them -  unfortunatley noone told the slugs

Both of my plants hav etwo small fruits each, with no sign of any more flowers of either gender for some weeks.

I guess that's it for the acorns then

I just had a golden nugget squash, roasted minus seeds and lid and filled with bolognese type mince topped with cheese and back in oven to brown.
It was scrummy  :)

Hope there are lots more to come ::)

That sounds so delicious, I will plant nugget next year, only scallop summer squash this year might see if it works with that.
