July

My autumn ones were ready much earlier -  May  :D and were ready to eat 'green' from mid April this year. (Green ones wouldn't keep, as they are too juicy to store  ;) )

From a spring planting  they were ready to take up mid June.

The ones from Really Garlicky are the hard neck Porcelain Garlic, variety Music. They did very well for me in Glasgow, planted in the Autumn.

You see this is what I wonder.............is it actually worth paying so much for something that costs 39p per bulb from the supermarket..............can you really taste that it was home grown after you have added all the other ingredients to your recipe...it is such a small part of the whole thing (unless you are doing chicken with 40 cloves of garlic )

DD would tell you that you risk disease and disaster with supermarket sorts, as well as them maybe not suiting our climate-- or summat like that  ;)

Or were you not trying to grow them, just eat them?

Oooops!

Actually I do think that homegrown have a better flavour, mainly because they are so fresh  :D

But as you say, it's a matter of opinion, so save the space for something you think worth growing  :tongue2: 8)

I don't have a lot of space in the garden, but bought a lot of garlic bulbs from the Isle of Wight garlic farm. Harvested the first lot in June from an autumn planting and the remainder (23 plants) will be coming up at the end of August (spring planting). So what I plan to do is grow something different next year, and then start again with the garlic - so every other year. No idea if it will work, but am going to give it a go!

This was my thoughts for a while, I wasn't going to do onions this year either as you can get a big bag for 69p then there was the garlic at 49p etc but then I remembered that was only a part (allbeit a big part) of why I was growing my own.

I plan on buying one net of garlic from The Really Garlicky Company (3 bulbs for £2 plus delivery) and I will re plant all the cloves the following year and just save what I need for the year after and so on.  Eventually that has to become worth it I would think, I go through at least 1 bulb per week

So presumably, if you do that the problems about diseased stock, unsuitable varieties, etc., would no longer apply and it would be perfectly safe to buy this eating garlic and use it as seed garlic? Unless there's another difference between the normal garlic and seed garlic sold by that company?

I think these specialist Garlic companies, particularly the Isle of Wight lot, are a rip off. You can buy good quality bulbs elsewhere for a lot less. We have had a fantastic crop (though I do think it is a particularly good year) of Cristo from Taylors Bulbs bought at RHS Harlow Carr for £2.49 for 3 large bulbs (hardly the cheapest of outlets) that compares with something like £8 from IoW.

That would be my assumption but I'm not sure, for the past 3 seasons i've only ever grown shop bought garlic to plant.  It is my understanding that saving them and replanting only strenghthens the crop for your soil type and climate etc but i'm sure one of the more experienced members could put me right.

Which type of garlic do people recommend for a strong flavour?  We generally just buy from the local Co-op but the flavour isn't always as forceful as we'd like and just thinking about buying for the autumn/winter planting (has to be planted on 25 November here)
