1st earlies - pentland javalin. excellent crop with not a mark on them even though i planted them on what used to be grass - no dreaded wireworm!

2nds - maris peer. pretty good crop on half, poor for rest. they've been munched on a bit to so might try something else next year

mains - maris piper and kind edwards. looking good so far.....

My results:-

Early - Pentland Javelin - good yield; heavy crops; good shape; pure white; no damage.

2nd early - Maris Peer - very heavy yield (20+ per plant); no damage; good size.

Main - Desiree - lifted 1 only for sampling. large spuds; no damage; high expectations.

For me this is an excellent year for potatoes. I'm just hoping that, with the high rainfall of late, I'll continue the success when I lift my Desiree.
The successes and failures of each year keep me motivated for the following year.

Considering the bl**dy awful weather we had earlier this year I'm very pleased with the crop so far. I've harvested 109lbs of tatties since the first container grown ones on 28th may. (I know it's a bit sad but I'm trying to keep a record of everything the garden produces this year)

F.E. Epicure, lovely taste but they are a bit knobbly.
F.E. Dunluce, good crop with some big spuds but badly affected by scab and indifferent taste.

2nd. Charlotte, what can I say. If you only plant one variety make it Charlotte. Superb as new potatoes and they make a decent bulk if you leave them.
2nd. Kestrel, Only lifted one plant but yield was good

Maincrop, I get them from the farm down the road.

My potatoes are not generally doing well, I think through lack of water.
Rocket, poor yield and not much flavour.
Charlotte, good yield given the lack of water, but I am disappointed with the flavour. I think i will go back to Arran Pilot next year.
Desiree and Maris Piper are still in the ground.

Earlies::::  Lady Chrystl, tasty and good crop, Belle de fontnay, medium crop and delicious.

Mid:::::    Vivaldi, Good size on a couple of plants I lifted today but I have not eaten any yet.

Main::::: Setanta and Golden Wonder, wont be ready until Sept/Oct

Ate Vivaldies today which were Scrumptious, went down and picked one row and getting about 5lb per plant, one spud weighed 1.5lbs on it's own !

Well for those of you who remember my quest for Mayan Gold --- they are great! Dug just one plant (they are maincrop I think) and had 15 tubers, bit small yet but gorgeous.

First Earlies: Rocket - disapppointing yield and not much flavour in comparison to others
Vales Emerald: - even worse yield but much tastier
Accord - very heavy crop, large spuds too, average about 15 - 16 per plant. Excellent eating and on my must grow list for next year.

Second early: Kestrel - just one plant dug -- YAYYYY plenty of spuds and lovely flavour

Still to come maincrops:
King Edwards (the 'volunteersa' at the school plot dug yesterday were great plain boiled   :D )
Rooster
Cara
Pink Fir Apple
blue ones I can't remember the name of, grown from tissue culture

Are you going to collate all the replies DD so that we can make an informed choice for next year.

Any possibility of setting up some sort of a ballot of varieties?

My potatoes are doing far worse than previous years for yield- blaming the lack of rain and being away in the middle of the hot spell.....  :tongue2: I did come back to find the plants in the patio planters had all keeled over looking miserable...

PATIO PLANTERS: sown in early April:

1st Earlies::::: Home Guard- Tasted great, v disappointing yield- for 3 large seed potatoes in each planter, i harvested *drumroll* three large-ish potatoes and a handful of marbles... LOL I kid you not! The plants were growing great before the dry spell too :-(

Maincrop::::: Pink Fir Apples and Kerr Pinks- afraid to look!!!

ON THE LOTTY: Planted mid to late May:
First Earlies - Lord Rosebery: (had a wee rummage and smuggled a couple- yield looks ok, but a lot of marbles so leaving them to grow longer) Tasted great- no sign of wireworm
Second Early -  Ulster Sovereign and Maris Peer..... plants are still thriving so leaving to get bigger
Maincrop - Kerr Pink (I am dying in anticipation- taste of home)

Not a bad idea, although you'll have to wait a few months for replies to be collated once the crops in.

Likewise with a poll, the choice of varieties is enormous and if I just included the popular ones "other" could win the day!

I may set up a poll once the crops in, inculding only the varieties mentioned on this thread and vote for, say, two varietie.  No mention - no votes!

Thinking further, it may have to be several polls, First Early, Second Early etc.. That should make the winter nghts fly by.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

1st early Rocket - harvested today. Good clean and abundant crop again.

Cooked well although they tended to fall apart a little - I think the skins weren't as strong as those on the Lady Cristl. Taste lovely but still prefer the delightful Lady Christl. You can tell I'm struck with those.
