plant suggestion please
« on: July 30, 2010, 13:02 »
I've not been on so much the last few days because I've been enlarging the paved area in my garden...........it's not good enough to be a 'patio'  :nowink:

But that means I have quite a bit of soil now banked up behind my bench in the corner.
I want to cover it with something rather than weeds ::) Grass would be ideal if it didn't need cutting :(
So the plant must be fairly low growing, preferably evergreen, vigorous as the soil is not good, put up with a sunny dry situation.  Doesn't really matter if it flowers or not, I just want the earth covered PDQ.

Any ideas anyone.............I know I can Google but recommendations are always better than that 8)

Perennial geranium (cranesbill) will quickly give it a beautiful flowering mat, look great, and easily controlled with the lawn mower or shears.

Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

How about sedum? The type they use for green roofs? They would not be as invasive as vinca(periwinkle) or cotoneaster.

Rockery plants are low growing, don't have to make a rockery to have them.

Dianthus, some are smallish and I think evergreen.

Sedums and saxifrige?

Herbs such as marjoram - it spreads quickly, as does origano, mint but in a sunken container. Would smell lovely where you sit.
I work very hard so don't expect me to think as well.

Sorry my update is a bit late...it's all this summer holiday baby sitting :D

I have got 3 small rosemary bushes to go behind the bench, with creeping thyme for ground cover. A creeping blue campanula and a low lavender for one side of the bench and pink flowered origano and a pink cistus on t'other. I treated myself to a pot of baby house leeks (sedum?) to put in the paving cracks when they are a bit bigger :)

Hope it all looks and smells nice by next summer ;)

That does sound lovely Mum, scented things, mmmm :) and blue things ;). I tried to grow house leeks from seed this year (twice), but they didn't germinate. :(
