bad smelling chicken
« on: July 29, 2010, 22:38 »
Hi all, we recently (2 days ago) bought 3 Rhode Island bantams, they are 10 weeks old and are all looking very sorry for themselves in the fact that they are all feather pecked, one in paticular is worse than the others and almost looks as if he is ready for the oven! but he also smells rather alot, tomorrow i am off to but some anti pecking spray but is there anything i can do about the smell? Any suggestions greatly recieved. Thanks.

sorry but I would take the bird to a vets. There are several illnesses that have a smell associated with them. As they are all feather pecking you may need to treat them all with ukadex or similar or even fit anti peck beak bits.
Staffies are softer than you think.

As ^ said. Apart from illnesses, a septic wound will have a distinctive rotten meatish odour.
Your reply as to what the problem was will be useful to others, so please let us know after your visit to the vet.

I would take them back to the person you bought them from and get a refund.

I agree Aunt Sally, especially before you get attached to them. It could just be one thing after another if they are poorly.

I have to say that I agree with Aunt Sally too. I paid heavily for birds that weren't right and kept them in the hopes of getting them fit but in the end they infected my existing birds. One of them died and I have had to cull 4 others.

Please don't risk it and take them back for a refund while you still have time.

Thanks all for the advice, they are all going back this afternoon and for now i wont be replacing them i want to make sure the 3 i had allready havnt been given any thing nasty from this 3. I have wormed them, and sprayed them with anti peck spray and also dusted them with a vetinary wound powder. So they are all going back a bit better than when they arrived. Alison.
