Economic way of supporting beans
« on: July 01, 2007, 17:56 »
we have attempted this year to plant beans, sweetcorn and pumpkins using the 'Three Sisters' method. The beans are way ahead of the sweetcorn and we're debating putting bean supports in. Cane and hazel are so expensive (we have 120 plants that need support!). Does anybody have a cheaper alternative. Assistance/ideas greatly appreciated! Thanks.

Welcome JCA   All I can think of is a grid frame supported on poles over top of beans with hanging string or cord for beans to climb. Will have to be strong for that many beans :!: ( Who are you supplying Birds Eye? ) :D   Bob

Thank you Bob!
Don't much like runner beans, am growing borlotti and canellini and I'm not sharing them with Birds Eye. We have had a look at Muntjacs idea and that's exercising the grey cells right now. Yes it does have to be strong - we used string last year and failed miserably - but we didn't apply much intelligence, the frame was way too lightweight.
Correction - I have been told that it is a windy site - maybe that's just eating too many beans!
Thanks for the welcome - wish we had joined earlier!

Hi JCA welcome to the forum.  I've built a Munty bean frame and it's performing brilliantly.  I strung it up with hop type sting  :D
