Hot???
« on: July 29, 2010, 13:51 »
One of our hens is nearly always looking hot. She holds her wings away from her body and opens her beak. Is it because of the recent hot weather? But at the moment all the chickens look fine except for her. She's the only one who looks hot ???

Does anyone have any ideas as to why she's very often hot?
Thanks

Good afternoon :)
Do you have different breeds?because only one of mine holds her wings out and opens her beak, the others don't because they are not so feathered and she carrys her 'duvet' everywhere!

Hi sneezer :)

Nearly each of our 19 chickens are all different colours and breeds . She is an orpington, but our other orpington who is much larger than her is fine  ???.

Thank you for replying, it's possibly that she is a different breed to most of the others :)

Maybe they are like people some can tolerate heat whilst others hate it?

Hi there,
One of mine does this when she's about to lay a soft egg or having laying difficulties...but also does this when she's too hot.

Hi CattinJ :)

Our one sometimes goes into the hen house and starts rosey as if she has just laid an egg, but she hasn't. We don't find many soft eggs.

Maybe she has trouble laying?

I never see her sitting in the hen house, so assume she isn't laying very often.
She's around 5 months old.
She seems fine other than very often hot ???

It sound like she might be having problems, yes.  I posted on here a while ago with these exact symptoms and was so worried ended up bringing her in for the evening and syringing water into her beak as she kept it open and was panting, all fluffed up and wings held out...I honestly thought this was it, and she was about to keel over.  The next morning at first light i got up to see how she was doing an she'd laid 2 eggs in one go!!!  One had obviously gotten stuck whilst the other was on it's way - poor old girl, no wonder she was in pain - would be like us giving birth I guess!!

not egg bound, POSSIBLY just having some laying problems - I'm no expert however...

Have you tried some olive oil around her vent to help out?
