Netting Veggies
« on: July 29, 2010, 13:20 »
I put nets over everything I grew and have come to slowly realise they probably don't all need it. Cabbages, cauliflowers and sprouts need protecting, but what else? What about beetroot?
The idiots are winning.

All i have netted this year are brassicas and fruit. Have had lots of beetroot with no problems at all!

Peas & lettuce!
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

We have found that the only things tht need protecting from the pigeons are the brassicas and peas. Peas and leeks also need protecting from sparrows.  We covered everything to start with but have discovered that things like beetroot, broad and runner beans, in fact most things are safe. Carrots do need protection from the fly and although we bought the resistant type we still covered.

Ad on:  We don't have any problems with lettuce apart from slugs.

I have not net anything yet but when the broccoli is bigger I will net as overwinter the pigeons are a pest.
Time waits for no man and I can't wait for growth.

Thanks, that's what I thought. I went mad and netted everything when I first started out. I bought hoops and piping and improvised wooden frames  . . .

If the cabbage white butterflies get there first, they may not have much chance to get any bigger  :)
All of my brassica's are netted all of the time from start to finish  :)
Cheers, Comfortably Numb.

I'm just off down the greenhouse. I won't be long ..........................
