whistling tree ducks
« on: July 28, 2010, 14:12 »
Hello, my daughter is desperate to have some ducks but as we live in an urban area we have so far said no because we don't want to antagonise our neighbours with noisy ducks - they already put up with our cackling hens!
However her latest gambit is to request some fulvous whistling tree ducks as they are small and quiet - as it says on the tin they whistle instead of quacking.  Does any one out there have any experience or words of wisdom please?  ::)  am I destined to be a duck wrangler or is she destined to more disappointment?

Im pretty new to duck keeping but have never heard of whistling tree ducks before. I have been told though that muscovy ducks dont quack so therefore wont be able to annoy neighbours. Of all the ducks I have (9 now) its the Aylesbury thats the loudest.

Notfamiliar with whistlingducksbut as a keen ornithologist Ican tell you that Wigeon whistle rather than quack, and I certainly wouldn't want to live next to them as they can be pretty loud, too

Muscovies are quite large but are supposed to be wonderful characters and very tame :)
Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted!!

thanks for responses - I did a quick read up on muscovies and although it said about them not quacking another comment did say that they were still loud.  So what noise do they make? anybody else got any advice on how to satisfy a duck mad daughter and still be friends with the neighbours?  ::)

Dont get call ducks unless you have understsnding neighbours like us !apparently Khaki Campell make good domestic ducks and dont fly and a good egg layer also dosile or Bantam breeds are good for a small garden enjoy them whatever you get we do  :)
