Christmas Potatoes
« on: July 28, 2010, 12:38 »
I am trying to grow potatoes in bags for Christmas for the first time.  I have turned compost bags inside out, put eight inches of compost in the bottom, three seed potatoes in each bag and covered them with about 4 inches of compost and some growmore (I think I am meant to add more as they grow through?) I have put a few small holes in the bottom so they dont get waterlogged.  When do they need to come into the unheated conservatory?  Is there anything else I need to do and should I expect the same number of potatoes as first earlies in a raised bed would produce?
Thanks Daisy
3 dogs, 8 chickens, 4 rabbits 2 guinea pigs, 10 quail, 2 fish and a demanding daughter who has gone to uni and left me with 29 animals to care for!!=)

I haven't tried this myself but I've read lots about people being dissapointed with results. See this thread, for example:

http://chat.allotment-garden.org/index.php?topic=61912.0

I remember an episode of a recent gardening TV program (Alice I think, from Gardeners World, doing her own program about growing vegetables) and we saw her opening her 'patio bag' only to find meagre pickings.

Hopefuly you'll be more successful but from what I've heard, I'd always choose to put them in the ground if I had the room.
