Greenery or POL chickens
« on: July 27, 2010, 10:34 »
I have just got 3 more girls.  (The last three claimed by the fox - Just killed and left too!) and am feeding them on layers' pellets.  I am never sure when it is ok to give them a bit of greenery?  They are absolutely desperate to get out of their run and fly over the fence at every opportunity so I wondered if I gave them something a bit more interesting to eat they might be satisfied!  I have never done so in the past until they are laying but I have never had Houdini chickens before!
Grateful for any advice.

Clip one wing to unbalance their flight.

How old are they.

In my experience they will always want to go anywhere that they can see.

Think they are about 16 weeks.  Two of them have quite big combs so I think they will be laying fairly soon.  Do you think it is ok to give them lettuce etc.?

It will be fine to give them greens and fruit (not citrus).  Not too much lettuce though as it gives them the squitts  ;)

I'll try the wing clipping and hope they are satisfied with some greenery then!  At the moment it looks like Fort Knox at the bottom of our garden.  What with keeping them in and foxy out it is quite a chore.  Thanks for the advice

Yes.  We had to do the last lot.  I was a bit worried that my new ones were too young.  They are obviously not too young to escape, however.

If they are too young it just means you might have to trim them again as the flight feathers extend a bit.

Don't clip both wings, just one.  The tradition is to clip the left wing but I've no idea why.

after they moult then you do the other wing - this way it keeps their muscles evenly balanced.
Staffies are softer than you think.

Easiest to do on your own ?, unless your a cuddy wifter. :)
