25p................... for Christmas seed spuds
« on: July 26, 2010, 13:29 »
.. per seed potato for ones to grow for Christmas down at local nursery.  That's 25p each. No wonder the customer after me put half of the ones he was going to buy back.

Sure it's an independent and is known to be expensive but that just has to be over the top doesn't it?

Have you checked out the prices via post?

£8.95 plus £3.95 p & p for 2 kg, for example....

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

They had them in my local Wyevale at the weekend.  Same price as the JBA ones I bough (I think), and no carriage to pay ;)  :tongue2:

Just saw some for sale in my local garden centre - £2.99 for 9 seed potatoes.

I tried growing some last year, left over from a packet of new potatoes bought for eating. Total failure. My own fault - I planted too late and then didn't cover them, so the frosts got them. Also, I should really have used proper seed potatoes. Anyway, when I did some Christmas day furtling there was nothing there - just a few roots. No, I tell a lie, there was one potato the size of a sugared almond.

I'm not sure if it's worth the bother really. Come the autumn I think I might be glad to put my feet up for a while.

That's still 30p a seed minimum.

Given the failure rate for Christmas spuds, I'm sticking with roast & mash with the turkey!

£3.99 per kg from JBA ... plus £3.99 for carriage (up to 10kg if you want to buy lots ...)

A kg is 12 - 15 seed tubers, 3 per bag (4 per larger container) ... so 4 containers / kg

I'm now thinking that Wyevale was more than that ... I'll double check next time I'm there.
