Too late for parsnips?
« on: June 30, 2007, 17:07 »
Hiya

Just been to the plot to find that relative has 'weeded' the root veg bed, including about 50 8 week old parsnip seedlings. (same person that planted chrysanths on top of my swiss chard last week)

Is it too late to plant more parnsips now? Do you think they will germinate in soggy clay soil?

Thanks

It is too late in my opinion.

But you can't lose anything by having a go.  If you don't thin out anything that germinates you might end up with a crop of baby parsnips for Christmas - if the sun ever shines again

I sowed a few about 10 days ago to hopefully have some small ones for Christmas.

I've just resown my parsnips due to dodo germination - a look in last year's journa show me sowing them mid June, and i got a crop - not huge, but they were nice!  Nothing ventured...

I'd have thought you plant parsnips for harvest the following year because they need a spell overwintering in the cold to develop their sweet taste.

They aren't going to have much fun in wet clay!

  I'd made them all special holes filled with seed compost and sand. It took me ages   Maybe I will do the same again and have a go for some baby ones then.

Thanks everyone.

I planted a second lot last year and they grew but never got as large as the originals.

But I planted the second lot, and all of my parsnips this year, in coffee cups from work. That way you can work out which has germinated and don't wast time and effort thinning. They transplant perfectly at first true leaf stage.

I am doing lots of stuff this way now, even carrots transplant if you do them early. I can germinate indoors regardless of the temperature/weather, and transplant to final spacings as soon as everything is hardened off. Guttering works as well, but I haven't yet worked a way of stopping the compost falling out of the ends, so I can only plant towards the middle.
