sugar snap peas finished already?
« on: July 25, 2010, 20:43 »
I was getting loads of sugarsnap peas for about 3 weeks or so, then for the last week, not a single one!  No flowers either, so none brewing by the looks of it.  Is that it?  My mange tout are still going crazy, loads of pods every day, but nothing from the sugarsnaps.  A couple of weeks ago I could pick them all off, and have a new lot to pick the next day!  Have I overpicked them or do they just not last very long?

Yes they've finished if there are no more flowers on them.  I'm not sure about sugar snaps life length though

They tend to come all at once, I picked all mine prepped, blanched and froze them :)

Cut the tops off them and get something else in their place ;)

Ah, so disappointing!  I love sugar snap peas!

I suppose it's way too late to plant more sugarsnaps?

My sugarsnaps were like yours mollyblob; very productive for a few weeks then they completely run out of steam and any further pods produced are nowhere near as good as the early ones.

I'm afraid that's it; if you want something with a longer cropping period you need to try something like runner beans!
Sow your seeds, plant your plants. What's the difference? A couple of weeks or more when answering possible queries!

Yes, sugar snaps need more than one sowing if you want them to continue being produced for more than about three weeks.

Aha... yet another example to make me wish I'd known about successive sowing when I planted everything out!

Im growing them and enjoying a big 2nd crop from them now. I had a mad 2 weeks then they stopped for 2 weeks and now there back with a bang. You can always try applying a feed to them when they seem to have stopped cropping, thats what I did anyway.
Woooooooooooooo

Well, one of my sugarsnap pea pots has been sacrificed for leek planting, and I'm going to feed the other one up and see what happens.  Fingers crossed for more peas!  Though with all this rain and the end of the sunshine it seems like nothing's growing at the moment!
