Help with poorly courgette leaves....
« on: July 21, 2010, 21:10 »
Hi all.

I had a nice evening tonight collecting my first crop, but I've got a little concerned with what's happening to some of my courgette leaves. I saw a similar post the other day but this looks different (nastier?). The courgettes seem to be coming through though. Anything to worry about you think?

Thanks buddies.

Has it been windy in your area recently - some of my courgette leaves were damaged in a storm recently - they are now putting out new leaves and fruits.

I don't think it's been too windy. I wonder if they did get damaged by some other means (2yr old boy plus friend....hmmmm)

Could be - the rest of the leaf looks fairly healthy.

Some of the older leaves on my courgettes have the same problem - but I'm not really worried since a lot of the other ones look healthy, the newer leaves are perfect and they're producing lots of fruit. Have you checked the for blackfly? That could be one reason - mine have been attacked quite a bit, and the leaves that had the most of them showed the same type of damage as yours do...

Thanks oldcow. I didn't check for blackfly, but I didn't notice anything 'pest like'. Would I notice the blackfly quite obviously?

You might have to turn the leaf over to check the backs.  It will look as if it's covered with tea-leaves if it has blackfly on it.

Yep, they "hide" on the back of the leaves, the little *.

I'll have a look tonight. Any organic methods of getting rid of them that you know of? or will it come down to a dose of a pest spray?

I just rub them off (since courgette leaves are a bit irritating, I wear thin rubber gloves). But that might not be practical if you have a lot of plants or if you can't check them often - blackflies reproduce really quickly.
Failing that, people on this site recommend spraying the blackflies with a soap based solution (a search of the forum should get you a more detailed "recipe").
