Runner Beans
« on: July 19, 2010, 12:31 »
Planted My Runner Beans mid-May. Thay've grown and produced masses of flowers but the flowers are dropping off and no setting into beans. I live in North Suffolk 8 miles from the east coast. We have had very little rain (since march). Nevertheless I have kept them well watered. Anyone any idea why I'm not getting anything to eat?

It's very possibly a lack of pollination problem, or even insufficient 'food' problem. When you water next, add some fertilizer or do a sloppy manure watering and see if that helps. If it's lack of pollination, then that's a tough one to sort.

If it is a pollination problem then try some cheap (a lot are half price now) trays of flowering bedding plants from the garden centre to encourage more buzzies

According to my Doc Hessayon a lack of pollination can be due to sparrows, bumblebees or a long hot season.  Spraying, which I just did before reading the book ::) doesn't help much.  He says to choose a white or pink flowering variety next year, which I will try.
Cheese makes everything better.
