Rhubarb Leaf Extract
« on: July 19, 2010, 10:25 »
Have been making rhubarb and ginger jam. As there were lots of rhubarb leaves thought I'd make up some of the insecticide John  mentions in his allotment books. I've now got 3 litres of the stuff.

QuestionsDo I just use it as it is? Is there a weight to liquid ration for preparing the stuff (couldn't find one)? Does it do for aphids only or is it harmful to other insects etc also?

I've got things on my nasturtiums but am worried about affecting the bees, including honey bees, that come in. Its not always possible for me to spray in the evenings because of working hours.

Thanks M.

When I arrived, there were so many docks, I thought it was Southampton.

Sorry but we can't discuss that on the forums.  EU says home made pesticides are illegal  ::)

but I would say it would certainly kill the bees and other useful insects  >:(

Thanks Aunt Sally.
May just go back to clearing the nasturtiums by hand.

Sorry to barge in, I can remember my Nanny using soapy water on her cabbages but does that only work on thick leaved plants? Grace

Its not the thick skinned veg, but rather its for thin skinned bugs I think.  The soap disrupts their skin chemistry.  So no good if you've got a Rhino infestation  :tongue2:
